Sixth time mentoring:

During this class we focused a lot on vocabulary used in the short story they were reading that week. We were helping students how to interpret the meaning of a word based on the context and words around it. Some students would get frustrated when they would get the meaning of a word wrong and become discouraged. Most of the class was spent silently reading each of the short stories and then about 5 minutes of the explanation and summary of each story. By the end of class the students felt like they learned a lot and they could confidently read a new short story and figure out what the new vocabulary means. But it was clear none of the students were intrigued by the short story choices so not all students actually read the stories. Teachers need to be able to choose material that draws the attention of their students and encourages them.
